Forget what you think you know about ‘caves’. Spanish based online delicatessen Orce Serrano Hams really are leading the way in reducing their business carbon footprint. The online retailer is a family run business based in the North East Granada region of Andalusia Spain – famous for its cave dwellings.
Owners, Iain Macdonald and Gayle Hartley run Orce Serrano Hams Spanish delicatessen from a cave hewn from the rock over two hundred years ago. Co-owner and manager Iain Macdonald says “Caves in Andalusia have recently had a big revival; our business is run from one of the most ecological premises in Europe. It is a highly effective way to reduce our business carbon footprint and maintain our operation in the same way as we would operating it from a conventional building.”
Spanish caves found predominantly in Southern Spain have been turned into some of the most up to date modern day eco-dwellings available. Temperature remains constant throughout the year so heating is rarely used for many months of the year. Solar power is often installed due to the mainly rural locations and to expand simply means carving out another room.
Orce Serrano Hams are “digging” additional storage facilities to accommodate increased ranges of Spanish cured meats, this will mean no heating or de-humidification to keep the fabled Serrano and Iberico hams in prime natural condition. With eco issues dominant for 2008 Orce Serrano Hams are in a prime location to exercise energy saving. Savings are passed on to the customer through reduced overheads making Spanish hams even more attractive to the UK market – and eco friendly.
