A Warwickshire grandmother is enjoying sell-out success from a novel piece of cushioned head gear designed to protect 480,000 accident-prone toddlers when they fall over every year. After speaking to advisers from Business Link West Midlands, Susan Port of Kenilworth, struck out and secured the exclusive UK and European rights to sell the Canadian-born product ‘Babynobumps’. Frustration drove the ambitious grandmother-of-six to seek help from the internet after years of having to look on helplessly while her grandchildren tumbled or banged their heads - risking a trip to A&E along the way. She has already sold out of some of her lines and had recently launched Babynobumps at the Earl’s Court Baby Show. “I was granted the licence in July 2006 by the Canadian firm who have the design patent,” Susan said. “My grand daughter was forever falling down and banging her head and as there wasn’t anything around in the shops at the time so I went on-line and when I saw the product - I just fell in love. “It was difficult trying to establish my presence at the fair when I was up against Mothercare and Fisher Price and other well-known brands. But everyone who saw the product said they loved it and I’ve sold 300 online, which is where I achieve most of my sales.”Business Link West Midlands adviser Steve Bryan added: “This is a perfect example of spotting a gap in the market and capitalising on that. “We were able to advise Susan and help her secure the rights to the Baby No Bumps brand. Her website is proving very popular and we sincerely hope the orders continue to flood in. Intentional injury is the leading cause of childhood disability – and sometimes results in death. With 2.25m children taken to hospital with accidental injuries each year, the financial cost to tax payers is high.“We also need to bear in mind many households have wooden flooring and block I’m just pleased I’ve been able to provide something to help protect infants so much closer to home.” |
