link:www.competitorsite.com

From there you will see a list of all of your competitors back links, and low and behold they have given you access to some of their most prized online nuggets. Links are the fabric of the web, so if a website has a high ranking position in search engines, Yahoo has a tendency to show the links with the highest website authority first. So, the list you receive is showing you where they are getting the latest and greatest link juice, typically by importance or chronological order.

I agree with the OP and it has certainly got much harder to get good quality inbound links than the good ol' days. I try not to worry about it too much nowadays and just try to keep up with things such as Twitter, Facebook fan pages, etc. and try to create new, innovative ways to increase traffic. The key thing for me is to create quality content that will interest people and, with a bit of lucky, that people will link to naturally.

My own 'philosophy' of link building is that it's about diversity. Not just domain diversity (buzzword alert), but also a diverse range of sites. If you're getting links from blog comments and directories - Google knows what you're doing and you'll find it hard to compete.

You need to go much wider than that, which is why my 66 ways (see signature) is so damned useful (blush blush)

Links from directories have almost zero value as for as the search engines are concerned as they are to easy to get and google places very little if any value on them There are 2 exeptions and that is Dmoz and the paid for Yahoo directory.
Also placing links in blog posts is almost pointless as a link building excersise for seo purposes as most blogs and forums, apart from this one , place no follow tags on all links left in posts/comments.
